Tennessee's Top Luxury Hotel Takes Five-Star Approach to Funding Preservations of State's Scenic and Historic Land

Tennessee's Top Luxury Hotel Takes Five-Star Approach to Funding Preservations of State's Scenic and Historic Land

Partnership Between The Hermitage Hotel and The Land Trust for Tennessee
Will Protect About 500 Acres a Year

NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 11, 2008 – The finest hotel in Tennessee has inaugurated an innovative program to save what is finest about Tennessee – the state’s open space, farms, woodlands, scenic corridors, vistas and historic places. About 500 acres of scenic and historic land will be protected each year through The Hermitage Hotel’s new partnership with The Land Trust for Tennessee.

The downtown Nashville luxury hotel, Tennessee’s only Mobil Five Star and AAA Five Diamond hotel, is now offering guests the chance to contribute $2 to The Land Trust for each night of their stay. The hotel forecasts that the program will generate about $50,000 each year, which The Land Trust estimates will cover the cost of preserving approximately 500 acres. The Land Trust is a non-profit organization that works with willing landowners to preserve forever the historic, scenic and natural values of their land

“Based on our typical occupancy, we look forward to donating half a million dollars in a decade. This is enough to preserve an area twice the size of Nashville’s Warner Parks, which is one of the largest urban parks in the country,” said Greg Sligh, managing director of The Hermitage Hotel. “And this is just the beginning. We plan to actively encourage other Tennessee hotels to join us in this project to save Tennessee’s heritage and scenic beauty. The potential benefit is enormous. We are very excited about what Tennessee’s hospitality industry and The Land Trust can accomplish to together.”

Governor Phil Bredesen, who founded The Land Trust for Tennessee, applauded the new program. “Our conservation and preservation goals are best accomplished through partnerships, when organizations with a shared vision work together to achieve a common goal,” said Bredesen. “This cooperative approach is an excellent example of how private entities can partner to achieve lasting benefits for all Tennesseans.”
